Clean River - Healthy Riverfront Program
*** SEWAGE OVERFLOW WARNING TODAY ***
Rainfall in the City of Peoria has caused a sewer overflow into the Illinois River recently from one or more locations shown on the map below.
When this warning is posted, please avoid full-body contact with the Illinois River in the area downstream from Detweiller Marina, as shown on the map. You may get sick if you swallow river water while swimming, Jet Skiing, or water skiing in these areas after a sewer overflow.
The City of Peoria is developing a long-term plan to reduce sewage overflows to the river during wet weather, as required under the Clean Water Act.
Meanwhile, the City encourages you to take the following actions to protect yourself:
- To avoid exposure to raw sewage, don't swim, Jet Ski or water ski downstream of Detweiller Marina during a rain storm and for three days afterward.
- Bacteria enter the river from many sources. If you are boating or fishing anywhere on the river, always wash your hands afterward and especially before eating, drinking, smoking or preparing food.
- Bring a waterless hand sanitizer with you when you're recreating on the river.
- Thoroughly cook any fish that are caught in the river. For more information on eating fish caught in Illinois, visit the Illinois Department of Public Health Web site.
